The four most common deficiencies in organisations worldwide, are in the areas of strategic planning, performance management, recruitment and selection of best human talents and team leadership maturity levels. Performance management is either not present or not integrated with the strategic plan and effective controls are not established to monitor ongoing performance. When performance management is present, it is usually based on backward looking historic spiked events or behaviour, with unclear and biased opinions, due to lack of clear-cut ongoing job specific facts, instead of forward looking corrective improvements based on specific latest task results.

Those Governments in countries with capitalistic systems, which are failing because they have allowed themselves to grow out of proportion into oversized kingdoms, do not understand why they are failing. Otherwise they would long ago have corrected themselves, not so? They are no longer mean and lean like they are supposed to be. The reason being that they do not use the correct performance management system, if at all and do not maintain optimum levels of employment and do not attract best candidates. The same problem can also be found in many private enterprises. Therefore, we are growing a network of knowledgeable members to become torchbearers for productivity on a global basis, to bring back some sanity into our world and a better future for all.

3. Founder Background:

Pierre Du Plessis passed Grade 12 in the first class, at Vaalharts High School, Jan Kempdorp, Northern Cape, South Africa by the end of 1964.

During 1965 he attended a one year Infantry Junior Officer’s course at the Army Gymnasium in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa.

He started his working life in 1966 with SANLAM, a life insurance company in Bellville, Western Province, South Africa. In the same year he also started attending extramural classes at night, at the The University of Stellenbosch Campus in Bellville and obtained the BA (Commerce) Bachelors Degree at the end of 1969, majoring in Economics 111 and Industrial Psychology 111.

During 1972 he accepted employment at a big mine and plant in Phalaborwa, Limpopo Province, South Africa. While working there, he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa in 1982.

He also transferred his army career from The Regiment of University of Stellenbosch to Phalaborwa Commando and attended many more army courses as well.

In 1992 he became Mine Manager at another nearby mine and started entrepreneurial endeavours from 1996.

During his working life he also obtained several other Diplomas, attended many courses, seminars and training sessions and worked with Foreign Consultants on special projects, which enriched and broadened his career exposure. He has always been a studious and ardent propagator of adult continuous education and has also undertaken various research studies.

He is regarded as an expert in Performance Management, Stock Control Theory and Methods, Training Methodology, Logistics, Exports and Imports, Management Development and Leadership Development. He is also an author of many books, e-books and designer of many training manuals.

1. What is the most important function of the head of an organisation, a department or a section?
To give direction by means of a vision statement, mission statement and a roll-down of objectives to immediate subordinates.
What tools are available to give such direction?
Regular strategic planning with the ring of immediate subordinates, incorporating the SWOT analysis technique (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats).
According to recent surveys, significant quantities of medium sized and big sized organisations, are still not using this direction indicating method.

2. What is the second most important function?
To ensure that the stated objectives are actually reached as best as possible.
What tools are available to monitor the progress toward goal achievement?
Apart from job descriptions and balancing human talent with job requirements, a performance management system is necessary to encourage employees to concentrate on what their jobs require of them, which can also be monitored in the short term on a regular basis so that actionable adjustments can be made to job outcomes, before it becomes too late.

Needless to say that in any worthwhile performance management system, employees must also be trained in the use of the different problem solving techniques like strategic planning, root cause analysis, the GROW model, lean manufacturing, six sigma, 8D methodology, mission-directed work teams, visual management and short interval control for continuous incremental improvements.

How can this be achieved?
3.1 The head of human resources management must be knowledgeable and talented enough to implement head-hunting, interviewing and selection methods, to entice the best human capital talent for job openings and also improve on those methods.
3.2 Identification of development areas must be part of the performance management system, so that individuals can be developed according to a planned talent improvement program. All team leaders must be trained in problem solving techniques, team leadership principles and interviewer competencies.

4. What is the fourth most important function?
To ensure that all employees become efficient managers and that all employees in positions of authority become not only efficient managers, but also effective leaders for their groups.
How can this be achieved?
Technical occupational knowledge and skills are usually obtained through external educational institutions. Management efficiency and leadership effectiveness are, however, a completely other dimension and only in rare cases somewhat included in technical occupational training. Therefore, special efforts must be made to accomplish the aims of management efficiency and leadership effectiveness on all levels of the organisation hierarchy. Usually it can be achieved through both internal and external training resources. All team leaders must be trained in management principles and team leadership principles.

The necessity of a formal performance management system can become less important, when the majority of the workforce of an organisation becomes mature enough to replace the formal system with a personal self-driven informal monitoring system.
